“I Will Never Eat Another Turkey”

Filmmaker Kevin Smith—known for directing cult-classic movies such as Chasing Amy and Clerks—joined Farm Sanctuary’s 33rd annual Adopt a Turkey Project. The director and his vegan daughter Harley Quinn Smith appear in a new public service announcement video that urges Americans to go vegan for Thanksgiving. “You’re always told by older people it’s okay to eat animals; we’re supposed to eat animals,” Kevin Smith said. “And, you know, for a long time, that’s what my generation believed.” While gently petting a turkey, the filmmaker equated the birds to cats and dogs, explaining that this Thanksgiving, his family would break with tradition and consume only vegan food. Speaking directly to two rescued turkeys, Kevin Smith said, “I would just like to apologize to both these ladies for the amount of their forefathers and mothers that I’ve put away. But you have my solemn word, ladies: I will never eat another turkey. And I will go out of my way to see that others might not as well.” Kevin Smith transitioned to a plant-based diet earlier this year after suffering a “widowmaker” heart attack and has since lost more than 60 pounds. The new vegan is also a big fan of plant-based eatery Veggie Grill, and begged the chain to open a location in his hometown of Red Bank, NJ to make it easier for him to order his go-to vegan nachos.
